In the ever-evolving world of karting, safety is paramount. The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has recently given the green light to a new set of regulations, specifically targeting karting apparel. The FIA Karting Homologation Standard 8877-2022 is set to reshape the landscape of safety gear, ensuring that kart racers are equipped with the latest advancements in protective technology.
What’s New in FIA Standard 8877-2022?
The cornerstone of the changes lies in the karting suits. The FIA has shifted from the traditional LEVEL classification to the more nuanced GRADE system. This change is not merely cosmetic; it reflects a significant enhancement in safety standards.
Abrasion Test Upgrade
One notable modification is the adoption of a new abrasion test methodology, transitioning from Cambridge to Darmstad. This move aligns the karting standards with those used in motorcycle protective clothing. The incorporation of this rigorous testing ensures that karting suits meet higher durability thresholds, crucial for the unpredictable nature of kart racing.
New GRADE 1
What is key to understand is where these GRADEs sit in relation to the old LEVELs. GRADE 1 replaces the previous LEVEL 2, and is now the baseline level of protection for kart suits.

Product Care
Due to the nature of karting it is often necessary to wash or clean your karting suit. To help prevent oil, gas, and rubber stains on your suit, it is recommended to Scotchguard your karting suit to help it stay looking fresh and new. When it becomes necessary to clean your suit, it is recommended that you have your karting suit drycleaned, to extend the life of your suit. If you wash your suit, hand washing or washing it on a delicate cycle in the washing machine inside a garment wash bag with COLD water. Please make sure that the belt and collar are closed on the suit to prevent the velcro from causing damage to the interior lining of the kart suit. Woolite soap is recommended as it is a non-abrasive detergent. DO NOT use bleach or anything similar. When drying the suit, always let the suit drip dry, indoors (out of the sunlight). The karting suit will dry faster if turned inside out.
